SharePoint Intranet – Oil and Gas Consultancy

Introduction

Another key part of my work with the multinational oil and gas consultancy for Core Technologies was being project lead and design developer on their departmental intranet using SharePoint 2010.

The client had been using an old intranet site to display complex Excel worksheets (called design tools) along with AutoCad and MathCad technical drawings. This system was adequate in terms of file search but had to be manually updated by the IT department and did not allow for any form of design tool preview without opening relevant files.  The requirement of the new SharePoint intranet was to encourage the structured use of on page content, document libraries, sharing, collaboration and search to enhance the system.

SharePoint 2010 publishing features enabled easy custom branding through master pages, page layouts, CSS and item styles. This enabled the site to have, not only customised general page and site content, but (through additional functional development) a branded site definition allowing for the easy set-up of new and existing design tools. Within one site a design tool could be built up featuring all the relevant information using a combination of page content, document libraries, lists and content query web parts.

As project lead I was involved in ensuring the custom functional development was as required and this included the site definition mentioned above, custom content types and custom document libraries. I was in daily contact with the client ensuring we delivered the project to deadline and on brief.
